Details
For yards under tree canopy or on the north side of buildings where sun hours are limited. Fine fescues tolerate shade noticeably better than bluegrass or ryegrass — they grow more slowly but persist where sunny grasses thin out and die back.
One caveat: shade seed isn't a substitute for sunlight. If a spot gets less than three hours of direct light a day, even fine fescue will struggle. For deep shade (under dense evergreens, tight corners), a shade-tolerant ground cover is the right answer instead.
