How Much Topsoil Do You Need for a New Lawn?
Depth guidance, the cubic-yard math, and which soil product fits the job
Topsoil orders are where we see the most second deliveries — not because people over-order, but because they under-estimate how much a lawn actually takes. Soil is sold by the cubic yard, lawns are measured in square feet, and the conversion trips people up. Here’s the whole thing in one place.
How deep should the topsoil be?
- Seeding a new lawn: 4–6 inches of quality topsoil gives grass roots room to establish. If your builder left you an inch of soil over compacted clay — common in newer subdivisions — this is the fix.
- Laying sod: same target, 4–6 inches of prepared soil under the rolls.
- Topdressing / overseeding an existing lawn: just ¼–½ inch raked in. More than that smothers the grass you already have.
- Filling low spots: whatever the hole takes — measure the depth at the deepest point and average it out.
The math
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. The formula:
Example: a 1,000 sq ft lawn at 4 inches deep → 1,000 × 4 ÷ 324 ≈ 12.3 cubic yards. Order 13–14 to cover settling.
Quick reference
| Lawn size | 2″ deep | 4″ deep | 6″ deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 3.1 yds | 6.2 yds | 9.3 yds |
| 1,000 sq ft | 6.2 yds | 12.3 yds | 18.5 yds |
| 2,000 sq ft | 12.3 yds | 24.7 yds | 37.0 yds |

Which soil product?
- Pulverized topsoil — screened and broken up, spreads evenly. The standard choice for seeding and sodding.
- Garden mix — topsoil blended with compost. Better for planting beds and vegetable gardens than for lawns.
- Leveling mix — for smoothing bumps and low areas in an existing lawn.
- Leaf compost — mix into clay-heavy soil to loosen it up before seeding.
Before you order
Topsoil is heavy — roughly 1,800–2,200 lbs per cubic yard — so our trucks carry a maximum of 6 yards of topsoil or garden mix per trip. A full lawn renovation often means two or three trips; we just schedule them back-to-back. And order about 10% extra: soil settles once it’s spread, watered, and walked on.
Topsoil questions
What’s the difference between pulverized topsoil and garden mix?
Pulverized topsoil is screened, broken-up soil — the workhorse for establishing lawns and filling low spots. Garden mix blends topsoil with compost for more organic matter, which makes it the better choice for planting beds and vegetable gardens. For seeding a lawn, pulverized topsoil is what most customers want.
How deep should topsoil be for overseeding an existing lawn?
For topdressing and overseeding you only need a thin layer — about ¼ to ½ inch raked into the existing grass. That works out to roughly 1.5 cubic yards per 1,000 sq ft at a half-inch. Any deeper and you risk smothering the grass that’s already there.
Can you deliver more than 6 yards of topsoil?
Yes — 6 cubic yards is the max per truckload for topsoil and garden mix (it’s heavy material), but larger orders just split into multiple trips scheduled back-to-back. Call (847) 358-4010 and we’ll set it up.
